Dave is a member of the City of Cape Town Economic Development and Spatial Planning Portfolio and serves on a variety of other smaller portfolios and sub-committees. He is also the drummer for local swing band "The Swingsetters."

Makeka's vision is to create a sound African aesthetic that serves the public and client, bringing dignity and grace to the built environment.

He was appointed Organist and Master of the Choristers of St George's Cathedral in Cape Town, South Africa, a post he held for a record forty-two years.

He previously served as CEO of the South African Heritage Resources Agency and Heritage Northern Cape. He has an MSc in Heritage Conservation and is Vice President of the International Council on Monuments & Sites. He regularly serves on the panel that evaluates world heritage nominations and does other voluntary work for UNESCO on the African continent and elsewhere.
